Lot 36:
Description
A collection of ceramic elephant still banks in various styles, sizes, and colours. The lot comprises passive money boxes constructed from glazed and cold-painted ceramic and porcelain. The group features a wide array of decorative finishes, including a yellow specimen with black polka dots and red flowers, a blue and white transfer-printed example in the Delft style, and several pastel-toned figures. Most banks are equipped with a coin slot to the upper surface and a removable black rubber or plastic stopper to the base.
One yellow polka-dot elephant bears a blue circular adhesive label to the underside reading SHUDEHILL GIFTWARE above a stylized bow icon. A large cream-coloured elephant features a red and gold rectangular foil label to the base, partially worn but legible with the characters MADE IN JAPAN. Other pieces include unmarked examples and those with illegible remnants of labels. This collection is presented across two shelving units.
Condition report:
The collection is in a condition consistent with age and use, exhibiting general surface dust and grime across all pieces. The yellow Shudehill bank shows heavy wear and peeling to one of the green felt pads on its feet (photo 6). Scattered minor glaze imperfections, small firing cracks, and areas of paint loss are visible on several of the smaller cold-painted figures (photo 4 and 5). Crazing is evident in the glaze of the larger cream-coloured Japanese export pieces (photo 7).
