Description

A collection of character jugs and souvenir crested miniature ceramics. The character jugs comprise several head-and-shoulders vessels and one seated figure. The seated figure features a musical movement housed within a wooden base, secured with metal screws and a winding key; it bears a red circular adhesive label reading BOND WARE JAPAN around a stylized B. One large character jug depicting a pirate in a grey tricorne hat is marked to the underside with a black printed stamp reading Disney PIRATES of the CARIBBEAN DEAD MAN’S CHEST © Disney, The Cards Inc. Group, Made in China. Other character jugs include a bearded figure in a green headscarf and a man in a black and gold tricorne hat.

The lot further includes a large quantity of miniature porcelain and ceramic items, predominantly souvenir crested ware. These miniatures take various forms including vases, teapots, jugs, cups, and specialty shapes like baskets and warming pans, many finished with gold-gilded rims. Visible markings within the group include a black printed mark on a miniature jug base reading PUB. BY. DYSON & SONS WINDSOR. MODEL OF JUG IN KENDAL MUSEUM. DATED 1602. with the initials W.H.G. & S. and a bird logo. Another piece is marked SHELLEY CHINA. Heraldic crests featured include the City of Winchester, Etona, Stratford-on-Avon, and a Scottish lion rampant with the motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT.

Condition report:

The seated musical character figure has a prominent vertical hairline crack running through the top rim (photo 4). General crazing is visible to the glaze of the older character jugs (photo 1). The miniatures are stored loosely in cardboard trays and exhibit some surface wear and rubbing to the gilded rims (photos 5 and 6). A small brown textured seed or nut shell is present among the miniatures in one tray (photo 5).
