Description

A collection of three antique boxes comprising a Victorian mahogany tea caddy, a wooden document box, and a japanned metal deed box. The mahogany tea caddy is constructed in a sarcophagus form with a cushion-shaped lid featuring a central marquetry diamond panel. It stands on four cast brass claw-and-ball feet and is lined with a combination of faded red paper and fabric. The second item is a mahogany style wooden box featuring a brass swing handle and a circular escutcheon; the interior contains a side compartment lined with green felt. The base of this box contains a handwritten inscription in black ink reading ‘Locked for [illegible]’. The third piece is a rectangular black-painted metal deed box with significant surface oxidation, complete with its original key and remnants of an internal fabric strap. All boxes show signs of period construction including dovetailed joints and hand-turned screws where visible.

Condition report:

The mahogany tea caddy shows missing fragments of the interior paper lining (photo 3) and oxidation to the brass hinges and feet (photo 4). The document box displays surface scratches and scuffs to the wood finish and tarnishing to the brass handle (photo 5). The interior base of the document box shows staining and remnants of an old adhesive label (photo 6). The metal deed box exhibits extensive paint loss and surface rust throughout the exterior (photo 7), while the interior shows heavy scratching and a detached fabric strap (photo 8). The demi-lune table and other background items shown in the images are not included in this lot.
