Description

A Georgian style oak side table or lowboy constructed throughout from solid oak. The table features a rectangular top comprised of two oak planks with a visible longitudinal join. The base stands on four square-section tapered legs and is configured with two small frieze drawers above a single long drawer. The drawers are finished with cockbeaded edges and house brass swan-neck handles on circular backplates and central brass escutcheons. The front apron is finished with a decorative shaped arch, with similar shaped frieze panels to the sides. Visible wooden pegs or tree-nails are utilised in the frame construction, particularly to the front stiles. The drawer interiors are constructed of oak with hand-cut dovetail joints visible to the side profiles. No manufacturer marks or labels are visible on the piece.

Condition report:

The table shows significant signs of age and wear. The top surface exhibits staining, water marks, and scattered scratches and abrasions throughout (photo 1). There is a notable loss and chip to the wood on the right-hand edge of the long drawer front (photo 6). Further scuffing and wear are present on the legs and lower edges of the shaped apron (photo 5). The brass hardware shows a heavy patina and oxidation (photo 3). A small vertical split is visible in the wood of one drawer front (photo 6).
