Description
A large decorative figure of a chef, constructed from a composite material, likely resin or fiberglass. The figure is designed in a caricature style, depicting a portly chef with an expressive facial expression, featuring a black moustache and wire-rimmed spectacles. The attire consists of a white toque, a double-breasted white jacket with silver-toned buttons and a red bow tie, and a light-green apron worn over white trousers and black shoes. The figure stands upon a circular, tiered base molded to resemble a brick-patterned platform with a dark-coloured surround. The spectacles are a separate wire component. No maker’s marks, stamps, or signatures are visible on the exterior of the figure or the base.
Condition report:
The figure shows a significant jagged horizontal crack and seam separation around the midsection, particularly prominent on the right side where the jacket meets the apron (photo 1). There is general surface wear and paint loss, notably on the black shoes and the edges of the base (photo 1). Accumulations of dust and grime are present in recessed areas, including the folds of the clothing and facial features (photo 2). The wire-rimmed glasses appear slightly bent and loose (photo 2).
