Description

This lot comprises an Edwardian style mahogany wall mirror or shaving mirror. The piece is constructed from mahogany with decorative stringing and veneers, featuring a break-front pediment topped with a central turned finial and an inset carved floral patera. The mirror plate is set within a rectangular frame supported by fluted uprights and curved lower stretcher. The mirror glass itself features a bevelled edge. The reverse of the mirror is covered with a layer of aged and heavily torn brown paper, which is held in place by a white hanging cord. No manufacturer marks, labels, or retailer stamps are visible on the frame or the backing.

Condition report:

The mirror plate exhibits significant and widespread foxing and silvering degradation, particularly visible towards the upper and central sections (photo 1). The mahogany frame shows surface wear, including minor scuffs and scratches consistent with use. There are visible cracks in the veneer at the top corners of the rectangular mirror frame (photo 1). The turned finial at the crest appears to sit at a slight tilt. On the reverse, the protective paper backing is deteriorating and exhibits heavy tearing and losses (photo 2).
