Description

A collection of mid-century souvenir wall scrolls featuring geographic subjects from Malta, Gibraltar, Australia, and Hong Kong. The scrolls are constructed from a black synthetic fabric with a velvet or flocked texture, decorated with vibrant screen-printed designs. Each textile is mounted onto black horizontal rollers finished with gilt-tone plastic end caps and yellow hanging cords. The Malta scroll includes vignettes of a Karozzin horse-drawn carriage, the town of Mdina, and a Dghajsa boat. Two Gibraltar scrolls are present: one depicting the Rock across the water with a coat of arms bearing the motto “Montis Insignia Calpe”, and another showing a sunset view with palm trees. The Australian examples include a Sydney scroll featuring the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, and a Western Australia map scroll decorated with native flora and black swans. The Hong Kong scrolls comprise one with a large tiger and eagle, and another depicting a traditional pagoda and mountain landscape. The Western Australia scroll is marked at the lower edge with “CITER AUSTRALIA”.

Condition report:

The collection is in good vintage condition with vibrant colour preservation throughout. There are visible horizontal creases and folds to the fabric of several scrolls from long-term storage, most notably on the Sydney and Malta examples (photo 4). Minor fraying and loose threads are visible along the vertical edges of the synthetic fabric. The gilt-tone plastic end caps show light surface wear and minor loss of the metallic finish (photo 1). The hanging cords remain intact and functional.
