Description

A collection of Japanese style wooden decorative objects including a small haribako or sewing chest. The chest is constructed from a reddish-brown hardwood with a prominent grain and features a tiered arrangement of four drawers and a single small cupboard door. The drawers are fitted with metal swing handles and circular pulls, and the interiors are lined with a red flocked fabric. The chest includes a metal carrying handle mounted to the top. The group further comprises a pair of dark-stained wooden candlesticks with open-spiral carved stems, an assortment of four wooden boxes featuring various inlaid floral patterns and openwork lattice lids, and a small patinated metal box with ornate corner mounts. Also included are two circular stained wooden stands, a globular lidded container with a metal finial, and two decorative plaques featuring relief-carved yellow roses. This lot comprises the wooden items only; the shelving unit shown in the images is not included.

Condition report:

The items generally show signs of age and use throughout. The sewing chest exhibits light surface scratches and scuffs to the wood finish, notably on the top and side panels (photo 1). The red interior lining shows light dust accumulation but remains intact (photo 2). The metal hardware on the chest shows minor oxidation and patina consistent with age. The dark-stained candlesticks and circular stands show light dust in the carved crevices (photo 3). The inlaid wooden boxes show minor wear to the edges of the inlay.
