Description
A collection of eight framed paintings and prints comprising various mediums including oils, watercolours, etchings, and engravings. The group features a monochrome engraving titled ‘PAYSAGE’ with printed inscriptions for ‘SOCIETE FRANCAISE DE GRAVURE’ and ‘(GALERIE DE MGR LE DUC D’AUMALE)’ in the lower margin. Also included is a monochrome etching of a canal scene in Utrecht, pencil-inscribed to the lower margin ’10/250 Hamburgerbrug Utrecht’ and signed ‘E. Wievinda’. A pair of tinted architectural prints depict ‘FOSS STREET DARTMOUTH’ and ‘THE BUTTERWALK DARTMOUTH’, both signed ‘RUSSELL’ in the plate.
The paintings within the collection include an oil on board depicting a church crypt or vaulted interior, an oil on board showing a silhouetted castle against a sunset sky, and two watercolours. One watercolour depicts an expansive valley landscape and is signed with a monogram ‘AB’ to the lower right, while the second shows a field harvest scene and is signed ‘J. HAVILL’ in the lower right corner. The works are presented in a variety of frames, including gilt-wood, stained wood, and dark-moulded styles.
Condition report:
The collection shows visible signs of age and wear. Several works on paper exhibit foxing and varying degrees of discolouration (photo 1). The harvest scene watercolour shows significant staining or water damage to the upper sky area (photo 10). Both oil paintings have minor surface marks and dust accumulation (photos 7 and 8). The frames show frequent condition issues, including significant chipping, loss of gilt finish, and surface scuffs to the wooden elements (photos 7 and 9).
